Week 2 - Maggie's Tutorial - Class Activity

Hey fellow Community Arts Activists,

Earlier in the year, our second tutorial consisted of an ice-breaker/get to know everyone activity where the previous week, was asked to bring in an object that you think describes one's own community. What was great about it, was that everyone participated, had fantastic stories to share, and was cool to see the variety of objects to relay the story. It was also interesting to see, that I could notice some similarities in terms of the type of objects brought to class. And one final point that I found out... that 1.5 hours is just NOT ENOUGH time to get through a Community-Arts tutorial. :D

Community Arts - Murals - Week 4

Hey guys,

A few weeks ago, when we we going through the images of murals on the topic of "Power, Identity, and Difference", there began an internal process of viewing art beyond its aesthetic value. As I label myself as "less artsy" and "less artistic", I was trying to see one's own individual uniqueness as value in of itself. Later that day, I had an urge to walk the streets of Toronto, and from the impact of the lecture, saw two murals.

 The first location is the under-bridge by Queen's Park that connects to the U ofT campus.

 

  The second mural I stumbled upon was just north of Beverly St and Dundas, 

(I believe it was on a public school.)

The additional images are from my trips to Montreal, whereby before taking this course, was always drawn by murals in general. So it is cool how I am starting to build connections with my own experiences in relation to my surrounding environment. [this class kinda ROCKS, don't you think?] Enjoy!!

P.S. Can you draw upon some course themes from any of the murals. What stories do you think each individual artist was trying to re-tell?

Blast from the past: Opening Ritual - September

Nov. 3 - How do we facilitate personal and social transformation? Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed

Our opening ritual was an active one the class was first told to walk, stop, run and shout before we were asked to as a class decide on the appropriate moments for each. Deborah Barndt led the class in a discussion of how personal and social transformation is rooted in place, politics, passion and praxis. These themes were explored partly through song.

This week all of the tutorial groups stayed together for the class for a Theatre of the Oppressed Workshop facilitated by Blakka Ellis.
